Flooding

Canals helped drain all of the water that once made South Florida an unwelcoming swamp. But today, many areas are still low-lying and are prone to flooding because of severe thunderstorms or the unyielding sheets of rain that come from hurricanes.

Follow these steps to minimize flood damage:

Know your flood zone
Get a kit
  • Make sure to have at least three days of supplies on-hand in an easy to carry preparedness kit.
  • You'll need at least one gallon of water per person per day and plenty of canned food that won't spoil if the power goes out.
  • Don't forget a flashlight and a radio, and plenty of batteries to run both devices.
Make a plan
  • Before floods threaten your area, meet with your family to create a plan.
  • Identify two meeting places - one in your neighborhood and one outside your neighborhood in case you are told to evacuate and can't return home.
  • Plan your evacuation route: Know where you are going and avoid flood-prone roadways.
Stay informed
  • Floods may take several hours or days to develop. Listen to your local radio or television stations for the latest updates on flood watches or warnings.
